Seit 2014 vermisst der
Gaia-Satellit der ESA eine riesige
Zahl von Sternen unserer
Milchstraße, um ein besseres
Verständnis der Struktur und
Entwicklung unserer Heimatgalaxie
zu bekommen. Die Milchstraße ist
das System aus rund 200 Milliarden
Sternen, dem unsere Sonne und ihre
Planeten angehören. Neben den
Sternen bilden große Gas- und
Staubmassen und die mysteriöse
Dunkle Materie ihre wesentlichen
Bestandteile. Um den Aufbau und
die Entwicklung des
Milchstraßensystems besser zu
verstehen, ist die genaue
Bestimmung der Entfernungen und
Bewegungen sehr vieler Sterne
nötig. Die auf die Sterne
wirkenden Gravitationskräfte, die
sich aus der Verteilung der Massen
in der Milchstraße ergeben,
drücken sich vor allem in der
Verteilung ihrer Geschwindigkeiten
aus. Am 25. April 2018, ist der
zweite Gaia-Katalog (Gaia DR2)
erschienen: Von mehr als 1,3
Milliarden Sternen
wurden die Positionen, Bewegungen,
Parallaxen (Entfernungen),
Helligkeiten und Farben der Sterne
mit hoher Präzision bestimmt.
Diese Daten sind eine Quelle für
neue Erkenntnisse in praktisch
allen Gebieten der Astrophysik und
fast täglich erscheinen ca. drei
bis vier neue wissenschaftliche
Veröffentlichungen, die auf den
Gaia-Daten basieren. In dem
Vortrag werden einige Highlights
dieser ersten Erkenntnisse
aufgrund des Gaia DR2 vorgestellt.</p>

wird die Erde von Teilchen aus dem
All getroffen, welche
energetischer sind als alles, was
wir auf der Erde kennen und
erzeugen können. Was sind diese
kosmischen Teilchen? Wie können
wir sie messen? Und woher stammen
sie? Tatsächlich sind unter den
vermuteten Quellen dieser Teilchen
die gewaltigsten und seltsamsten
Objekte in unserem Universum:
Rotierende und kollidierende
Neutronensterne, Überreste von
Supernova-Explosionen,
supermassive schwarze Löcher und
auch die mysteriöse Dunkle
Materie. Um mehr über den Ursprung
der kosmischen Teilchen zu
erfahren, stehen auf der
Kanareninsel La Palma die zwei
MAGIC Gammastrahlen-Teleskope und
das erste Large-Sized Telescope
für das zukünftige
CTA-Observatorium. Mit diesen
Teleskopen gelingt es den
Wissenschaftler*innen am Münchner
Max-Planck-Institut für Physik,
die höchstenergetischen Phänomene
in unserem Universum besser zu
verstehen.</p>
