die Raumsonde Voyager 1 auf
Initiative von Carl Sagan das
berühmte Bild von der Erde als
kleinem bläulichem Staubkorn mitten
im Schwarz des Weltalls auf: die
Erde — ein „pale blue dot“.</p>
<p style="margin: 1em 0px; text-align:
justify;">Alles, was wir Menschen
für groß und bedeutsam halten,
Kriege, Liebe, Lust und Not, nimmt
aus ein paar Lichtstunden Entfernung
nicht mal mehr ein Foto-Pixel ein,
ein Punkt in dem weiten Nichts aus
dunkler Kälte.</p>

Galaxienhaufen bestehen aus bis zu
einigen tausend Galaxien und sind
die größten bekannten Strukturen im
Kosmos. Bei der Kollision von
Galaxienhaufen wird mehr Energie
freigesetzt als in jedem anderen
physikalischen Prozess seit dem
Urknall. Ein Großteil dieser Energie
breitet sich in Form von
Schockwellen mit einem Durchmesser
von mehreren Millionen Lichtjahren
durch das dünne Gas aus, das den
Raum zwischen den Galaxien in den
Galaxienhaufen füllt. Das Gas heizt
sich dabei auf mehrere 100 Millionen
Grad auf und ein Teil der Elektronen
und Protonen werden auf
Geschwindigkeiten beschleunigt, an
die kein Teilchenbeschleuniger der
Erde herankommt. Ludwig Böss von der
Universitätssternwarte der
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität
München (LMU) erklärt an diesem Café
und Kosmos-Abend, wie Forschende
diese Prozesse in modernen
Supercomputern simulieren
und wie uns das dabei hilft, die
komplexe Plasmaphysik in
Galaxienhaufen zu verstehen.</p>
